Here's something I made quickly for you, hope it's understandable. Try to use two extreme opposites when using colors. The closer to clashing of the two colors the more extreme the contrast should be. This creates shapes of background. So you are starting from the edges, and go from there, making fading "gradient" out of those two colors. But the edges should be detailed. Have you ever tried to draw a whole background in black and white mode? ;p
That is when you REALLY get the lightning right, you're not distracted by colors, you just see contrasts.
After you'll finish background in black and white, you just lay colors over it, but it's still stays contrasty! 8D

What kind of backgrounds are you striving for? :] Can you show me some pictures from other artists?
