Oh, its pretty simple actually. You just have to have Photoshop or Illustrator. You select the background and delete it. That will make the background'Transparent', meaning there is no background at all. Then you add a new layer/ few new layers. Make sure they're transparent and then select the area outside the character and start adding things...
