Character Rules

Written by Moss :

Hello Animation Source!

Mods have noticed all the problems going on with characters and what is accepted.

The first and probably one of the most important rules is that sparkle dogs/horses/lion ect... are not allowed.  And if you aren't sure what a sparkle character is, it is any character that has an unnatural color that you would not find on the regular animal. So for almost any animal, that includes the colors blue, green, red, purple, pink ect. To go along with that, unrealistic designs are allowed. Please do not give your character excessive jewlery, this does include bracelets, necklaces, collars, leg warmers ect...

Many characters are getting deactivated because either we ask you to clean the body/head image or you don't have enough bio.

When it comes to finding a head image, make sure it is of only the head. It must be colored in and drawn/rendered cleanly. Linearts are allowed and if you choose to use one, make sure that you credit it. That is very important. Same goes for the body picture. It has to be colored in cleanly, again, if you use a lineart, credit the artist. A word of advice, if your character contuines to get deactivated because we ask you to clean the body picture, I suggest you use a lineart There are a ton out there, especially of wolves.

Now about the bio. What most mods look for are;

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Likes:
Dislikes:
Personality:
History:
Related to an official site character:

Those are our main focus, but users also include Parents, siblings, mate, pack/herd/pride and more. A great example of a good bio are these character here;

Always always try to make an effort in your bio, do not just rush through your characters, if you create a charcacter, it should be for a reason. Which does up the point to try to include your character in fan works. We are seeing to many characters in where the creator does nothing with them.

Another important factor. Your first few characters MUST be related to an official Balto character. Our webmaster said when it comes to relation to an official site character, it is more of a ratio. So try to keep the majority of your characters with a relation to the an official characters that is part of the movie.

Another small thing that came to my attention from Blazetail, if you are on Spirit Source, do not create a parrot or a lion. Try to keep character's species one that you see in the movie. If you decide to create a character of an animal that doesn't appear in the movie, but can be found where the movie takes place, they MUST have a relation to an official movie character.
If you have any questions regarding characters, feel free to send a PM to the moderators or just any individual mod!

For Spirit Source: Pegasus' and unicorns are NOT allowed.

I wholeheartedly agree. I actually based Julian off of a variety of different Husky coats, ranging from Agouti to Sable. Just a simple Google search comes up with so many different results, and it only takes a few clicks.

Imagination does not have to come in rainbow color.

By the way, thanks Wolf. Julian is my baby~< 3

Yes YOU CAN. Mix the dog breeds up, and horse breeds.

Look at all different coats of many different breeds:

http://www.animationsource.org [...] flover201/wolflover201125f.png - She's a Mackenzie River Husky, and her coat is based of the real life dog breed. Look at the different realistic colours spread about in her.

http://www.animationsource.org/balto/en/chars/Julian_Maxie/41637.html< /a>
Maxie's character, Julian. His coat is absolutely gorgeous, lovely colours in there. He doesn't look plain at all.

http://nicholescritters.homestead.com/AA_lt_sable.jpg - Look CLOSELY at the detail in the coat. Dogs don't need to be sparkle to look gorgeous.

AND ALL of these are much more appreciated than sparkles. NO DOG HAS THE SAME COAT MARKINGS. If you pay close attention, that is, you'll notice how different and gorgeous their coats can be. There are no need for sparkles.

And that's just dogs, think about cats and horses. Especially leopards and cheetahs.

....You can be creative without making a "new breed" of dog. °x° And not all dogs look the same, do some research.

this rule stops us creating a new breed

Do you seriously think that imagination is sparkle dogs, and just because they've been banned there's no imagination left? Sparkles are not imaginative or creative, they are beyond the joke ugly and are just a complete mess of colour, with no originality or sense to them. Animation Source IS NOT Sparkle source. Take them to Deviantart if you still want to post them. There are other places :/ You can still be imaginative with realistic characters. :icon297:

No, not really. On a lion maybe, just a super bright yellow really isn't common. And a bright yellow wolf is a definite sparkle. Again, colors vary through species.

sparkledogs clogged up the fan characters page and some of them had so much detail and jewelery no one can even redraw them anyway so they were pointless. glad they are banned (:

I would think a green horse, lion or dog would be a sparkle, regardless of how light the green is. Green is not a natural color on horses, dogs or lions.

Light pink is anther matter. Champagne and Cremello can have a slightly pinkish hue to it, and both of those are real horse colors. Nala has a very slight pinkish hue to her. As for dogs, well, you've always got the Chinese crested and Mexican hairless, so they would naturally have some form of pale pink skin showing. Not hot pink or neon pink, of course, but...you know, 'skin' pink.

Once again, just my opinion.

Mods, what do you think on this matter?

My thoughts exactly MW, first one is a sparkle for sure, I would be flexible about the 2nd one. The third as you said is perfectly fine.

First one definitely looks like a sparkle. The second one could stand to be toned down about a hue or two. The 3rd one looks like a roan. But that's just my two cents.

MW- I really do see your point, and we will be flexible, I personally had never seen a horse with such a red color, I understand you don't mean for it have a vermillion coat or anything, but horses with a silver blue tint I have seen. We will allow red horses, but a Jenna red horse I think would be to much. And notice I said 'I think,' so I won't deactivate anything regarding this subject until the other mods give their opinion.

It's definitely safe to say that green, purple and hot-pink are not realistic colors on any horse, dog or lion and should most assuredly be considered 'sparkle'. Dixie may have this whole 'lilac' thing going on, but it could just be a slightly exaggerated greyish color. Certainly not bright enough to burn at your retinas and would be an acceptable color. Jenna's red, in my opinion, is much duller and more realistic in the first Balto movie. She's far too red for my taste in the second film.

All in all, when it comes to colors like orange, red and blue, the mods will have to use discretion and maybe even do a quick image search to be certain that the color of the character in question is either correctly portrayed or too garish and should be toned down a bit.

But neons are a definite no-no, (unless it's for a bird like a toucan or parrot).

MW Roach - That's true, my point still stands about your photo example being overly saturated though.

I agree with your analysis (hence why I said 'does not always' in my previous comment) and that it does make a good argument for what colours can be on a realistic design. Green, pinks and purples, meanwhile, are not natural colours on a canine and probably never shall be. I agree that characters that have dull shades of red (i.e. crimson or even burgundy) shouldn't be classed as 'sparkledogs' as crimson itself is not a 'sparkly' colour. When I think of 'sparkly'; the colours pink, lime green and such come to mind, not crimson. People may bring up Dixie and Jenna in their arguments for sparkledogs to be allowed here but the shade of red on Jenna's fur doesn't burn into my retinas, for one thing.

To be truthful, I think only the fully sparkle characters that are covered in blinding neon colours should be taken down, the others, left alone. But that's just my personal opinion.

Nice picture, but not at all what I was talking about. There is such a thing as 'blood red' colored horses. And they are very red in color. Whether that photo was 'saturated' or not, the color does exist. After working with horses for 17 years, I've seen some very strong colors. Even in blue and varnish roans, the grey often has a blue tint to it, especially if the horse is healthy (a healthy horse often shows a very vibrant coat). And, when you get a certain amount of several different shades of grey hairs mixed with black and white hairs, as seen in Australian Cattle Dogs and Blue Heelers, you do, in fact, get a more-blue-than-grey color. Just sayin'.

MW Roach - that photo looks pretty over-saturated to me. I think, in reality, that horse would be a chestnut colour, like this: http://www.horse-report.com/images/red-horse-names.jpg

Also, referring to animals as 'red' or 'blue' does not always mean a literal blue or red colouring. It's like in blue merle coats on Australian shepherds/border collies and such, it is more of a grey colour rather than blue. Just sayin'.

I think Moss just means that sparkles just have characters that are so outrageously colored that it's impossible to have an animal with that kind of coat (or feathers, scales, or whatever the animal has). If its a color that's about borderline, like a silvery blue or a near blood red, either the mods will tell them to tone it down a bit or just leave it alone, depending on how close it is to neony stuff. To suddenly ban every single character that even slightly has colors that COULD be described as "sparkle material" is just...well, not a well thought out plan.

If however, the creator of the character has proof of real colors, then they show it to the mod who questioned them about it and they just leave it alone.

MW has a point. Fur colors in some animals can get pretty wild.

It may not be 'Jenna-red' but it's pretty darn close. I think, before the mods go deactivating all the characters who portray colors they may not think are real, perhaps they should do a little research first and see what ARE realistic animal colors. The color of the horse in the link is called a 'blood-red'. You also have 'blue roan' and 'red/strawberry roan' horse-colors, as well as rare colors and patterns.

Also, not to sound disrespectful, but shouldn't ALL the global mods agree on what's a 'sparkle' and what isn't? It just seems like it would cause a lot of problems if only one mod feels that a certain colored character shouldn't be considered real, when there might be others who have in fact seen said color before and know it's real....

Yes, at least I would consider that, since horses aren't red but more of a brown-red.
