No, you're not dreaming - there are indeed new icons under the site banner!

I wanted to give a modern look to the interface and make it easier to use, with large and easy to identify icons.
It retains all the previous possibilities, they're just reorganized a bit. And this new interface will allow me to add some really useful possibilities soon!
You'll also notice a new "Quick Menu", which replaces the plain ugly select box and should make your life much easier to switch from one Animation Source site to another! :)

Truthfully, I think adding completely new features like this should come a bit later. There are many things behind the scenes, as well as glitches/bugs/coding that should all be fixed/updated before changing graphics and such.
I know I also mentioned this, and I'm not rushing or forcing you, but I think it would be nice if site builders had the ability to make their own icons (for each layout) to better suit a design if it clashes with their design. I know I would like to be able to change them on Zootopia Source if that ever became an option.
Here is an example of what I would create if I had the option to: https://i.imgur.com/qA1LSxK.png
NOTE: I'm not saying that they should all be changed, as that wouldn't be fair on your part. But I will be honest and say that the icons look nice on the French hub.
Finally, and this is just my thought, maybe remove the background behind the shoutbox (it's ditracting on the Nocturnal District layout on Zootopia Source, as it appears as white) post? I've never had a problem with being able to read the text in the past. I also think the space between the user's avatar and their post isn't being used in the wisest of ways. Perhaps scoot the avatar over, then you could scoot the icons (the ones related to our accounts) over more? I think they seem a bit it squished there.
On a positive note, I do like the flag designs. The quick page is pleasing to the eye as well. I always had to scroll up and down on the old one, or simply go to the hub, to navigate the sites.

I even offered him an alternative selection based upon a page of icon images I found, which he didn't care for. I do think he needs to consider alternatives. The icons need to fit more into the style of the existing layouts overall...and not clash. But he says he created these, so I am reticent about criticizing them. I only mentioned that they look a bit too cartoony, and that they simply don't fit into the basic Animation Source layout or other source layouts. He said he'd wait to see what others have to say before making a final decision. So it's good that he wants input.
I applaud him for wanting to update Animation Source. But I personally think he needs to reconsider the design of the icons. A lot.
Let's not beat around the bush, personally I do not like these changes. To me these new icons absolutely do not fit the entire theme/layout/style of the site/s. They look like they date back to AOL doal up internet days. Like that's where I'd expect that style, some old, maybe 2003 website.
Don't get me wrong, these icons might look good on a website with a more fitting style but here they just look off. And spending some time in the shoutbox it seems that it is not only me who doesn't like them. Many members seem to prefer the old style. It was way more convenient and it actually fit visually.
I do have to say I like the new flags though, and the quick menu is neat.
