Until their owner decided to sell them. Star was sold to the man who owned Nikki, Kaltag, and Steele. Coal was sold to a man named John Cook. He was a policeman, so Coal became a police-dog. Soon he met a dog named Mirabel. She was a police-dog too. They fell in love.

One night when they were on patrol, they saw something suspicious in front of them. They ran up to check it out. It was a bear! Mirabel realized that it was the bear that had attacked her when Mother Isabela had saved her! (Also the bear that attacked Balto) Coal got into a big fight with it to defend Mirabel. They fought and soon he had run the bear off. But it had scratched him in so many places! He lay there, bleeding. His right eye had been cut, and his sight was leaving that eye. Mirabel brought help, and soon he was nourished back to health. And he was reunited with is brother, Star. And they lived happily.
