Aku was the second born in a litter of 4 pups. He was always a rather shy and quiet pup, who chose to stay in his own company rather than playing with his sister and brothers, even though he did love them more than anything. He was also very curious, and often wondered out and about on his own, which his mother didn't like too much, she didn't want him too near the woods but there were times when he did venture there despite Aurora's protests.

When it was time for them to be adopted, Aku was chosen by a young woman. She became his best friend, and as he grew, the woman discovered that he had a very keen sense of smell, he was excellent at finding things and of course, being part wolf, all his other senses were really sharp. She wondered how Aku's skills could be used for something good, and then had the idea of having him trained to be a search and rescue dog. At first Aku was a bit hesitant about it, but as his training proceeded, he discovered he loved the job and decided to decicate his life to helping others.

When Aku and his siblings were all grown up, their mother revealed the truth about their father: They learned that he was a grey wolf, and Aku was very surprised and, rather shocked at first. It took some time for him to get used to the idea of being offsrping of a wolf, but when Aurora told them that Amaurq had been killed by a hunter before they were born, Aku wished that he would have gotten a chance to meet his father and find out more about his heritage. 

One day Aku met a female alaskan malamute named Willow, who turned out to be Steele's daughter. But despite this she was nothing like her father, and the two became fast friends, much to Steele's displease. Aku found himself really enjoying WIllow's company, and soon discovered that he was developing feelings for her. Steele tried countless times to stop them from seeing each other, and one day he even gave Aku a small beating as a warning to stay away from his daughter. When Aku told Willow about it and she saw his bruises, she was furious and confronted her father, which resulted to an argument between them and her running away. When it was getting dark and a blizzard was coming, and she still hadn't returned, Aku grew really worried, and figured something must have happened to her. He set out to define the forces of nature to find Willow, putting all his rescue dog skills to use, and finally found her injured and cold. He carried her back to town and to the vet, and learning that Aku had saved his daughter's life, Steele apologized to both him and Willow and agreed to let them see each other.
