Zarge was bred by an ex-racing musher who had taken up sled dog breeding. He was adopted as a racing dog at the age of 11 weeks, once he reached the age of 1 year he started training as a sled dog and by the time he was 4 years old he was the lead dog of the best racing team in Nome.

He won the golden collar every year (the same one Steele wore in "Balto") and while he took much pride in it he has always hated some of the other racing dogs, mainly those who are egotistical about their superiority.

He likes to take walks alone, never straying too far from Nome but enough to have some time alone. It was during one of these walks he met Aniu, the white wolf. When he met her she was alone near Nome's beach after having an arument with her father. They chatted for a long while and made an agreement to meet every other night in the same place.

After almost a year and after falling in love, they had a litter of pups. Aniu had her litter on an abandoned boat but it wasn't long before her parents, the alpha's of her pack, found out about Zarge and the pups. Zarge and Aniu decided it would be best for Aniu to take the pups and convince her parents to let them live in the pack as Zarge and his team were leaving for a championship race elsewhere. As Aniu took their pups, one by one, to a safe and new den far away from Nome in the forests one pup got left behind, a male they'd named Balto.

Only 2 weeks after that Zarge's musher took his team and went to participate in championships elsewhere. Zarge had not since been back to the boat, he'd changed his regular walk route to a hill outside Nome where he'd sit and stare at the distant forests.

After the championship his musher decided to move around to different places across the USA and Canada, competing in different races. Zarge never got back to Nome until he was 8 years old and his musher was entering the races in Nome for the last time before he got a new, younger team of dogs and Zarge's team would retire in Nome. Only when he got back did he learn of Balto and so far is building up the courage to tell Balto who he is and try and learn of the fate of Aniu.
