Biography -
Like many dogs at the time, Fawn was born with the intent to be sold as a sleddog. She didn't mind, that is what her parents did and that is what she supposed she was destined to do. Her only qualm about the prospect of being a sleddog was that she'd leave so much behind and there wouldn't be enough time to learn what she wanted to learn in the world. When the time came to be adopted Fawn and her siblings were hauled out into town, and to her surprise she was quickly picked up by a little girl. The next thing she knew, she was being carried away to the life of being a housedog.
At first, the prospect of being locked up in a house bored Fawn. There was so much more outside, and she'd rather be out there than being contained to a stuffy house. Her girl had other ideas though, and for quite some time Fawn was only a playmate for her. Fawn didn't mind this at all; the little girl had plenty of fun ideas in mind and Fawn was happy to follow along the best that she could. When the snow that had occupied the outdoors finally melted and the girl showed interest in going outside, Fawn followed suit and was amazed at the freedom she was granted. Her humans had no problem with her wandering into, and around town, so long as she returned. Fawn used this to her full advantadge, and quickly made plenty of friends. Some of them were on the various sled teams hailing from Fairbanks, which was how she was introduced to the enigma of a dog named Chase.
Fawn had heard about, and seen, Chase long before she formally met him. She'd heard either that he was a raving lunatic or a brilliant leader, and these reports were based solely on the dogs that gave them. She'd seen the wiry black husky running about, either enclosed in the fenced off area belonging to the old kennel in town, or trotting down the streets. A few of her friends were smitten with anything that pulled a sled, and on more than one occassion she was carted along with them as they pestered Chase down the streets of Fairbanks. As her friends asked dim-witted questions and laughed nervously after Chase responded to them, Fawn found herself becoming annoyed. She asked Chase a rather in depth question, and for a moment he stopped moving and actually looked back at the group of females behind him. From that second on, he was the one to seek her out and Fawn became smitten with the charismatic husky. They quickly became a pair and not long after that, after a visit to the vet, Fawn learned she was going to have puppies. The timing coouldn't have been better, Chase was going away for quite some time to do races, so she'd at least have a chance to tell him.
A few lonely months later, a single brown and black puppy enterred Fawn's life. She named the pup Vincent, and as soon as he opened his eyes, he was curious. For a long time, the pup was very nearly mute, spare for "mum" or small excited responces to the world around him. Fawn found this endearing, and every day Vincent stole a little more of her heart. However, Vincent's endearing and cheerful nature changed rather suddenly. Gone were the days of "mum" and squeaks, in were rather sarcastic and cynical responces. Fawn never questioned it, and figured her son had just gone through a phase. It didn't change her love for her son at all. Chase returned shortly after the change in Vincent, and was put off by his son's behavior. Fawn could only watch disdainfully as father and son began their lifelong fued. As Vincent became more and more snarky towards Chase, Chase became less involved with his son, and ultimately Fawn herself. When Chase did bother to come around, it was often only for a short visit, or when Vincent was sound asleep.
It got worse after Chase won the Golden Collar. He rarely showed up at all now, Vincent began to hate him. Fawn wondered what officially spurred all this; he was still the same dog she'd met and fallen in love with not that long ago. She didn't understand how he could become so vacant, and she could physically feel her life falling apart. When Chase was away, instead of absorbing herself into Vincent, she found herself becoming irrational; becoming snappy to her friends, and even Vincent. For his part, Vincent did all he could to help. While he may have been nothing but a thorn in Chase's side, he was very kind to Fawn, and she was grateful for that. When Chase returned, everything was back to normal, which was honestly quite strange.
The strange lifestyle ended rather abruptly, and quickly. Vincent informed Fawn that his owners were moving to a smaller town called Nome, and they were taking him along with them. Of course she was heartbroken by this, and spent as much time as she could with her son before he left. She also noticed that for the first time in their lives, Chase and Vincent were actually being civil to each other. Perhaps Vincent's news had chaged Chase, she never questioned it and was happiest in these few weeks, despite the bittersweet ending they had. After Vincent left, Chase had to go and train for the upcoming sledding season. After one of these practices, Fawn heard a commotion going on in town late one evening, and felt a pit form in her stomach. There was a small crowd gathered around the old kennel where that the team had occupied. Several of her old friends were gathered around, all with panic-striken expressions. They informed her that the team had encountered a bear not far from Fairbanks, and that some of them were critically injured, if not dead. Not long after this, the team's musher shooed away the group of dogs that had gathered, instead of going home Fawn just trotted off to the other side of the building. She needed answers. To her surprise, as she rounded the corner she came face to face with Icarus, one of the dogs on the team. She pleaded Icarus to tell her if Chase was alright, but all the husky could offer was a sullen expression.
Fawn knew that Chase was dead. She didn't need words to convey this. For the first time in her life, she was utterly alone, Vincent was hundreds of miles away, and Chase was never coming back. Instead of becoming the shell that's she'd been used to becoming, she began to rebuild. Once the sledding season officially started up again, she found herself wandering into the kennel Chase had called home for all his life. They were building a new one, across town, and Fawn figured it would be torn down. It was all but deserted already, but far across the room she glanced silver fur. She knew that one of the dogs on the team, the closest to Chase, had fur of that color and was honestly surprised that he was lying in a cage. This was until he lifted his head in her direction; his right side of his face was marred with scars, and his eye was missing. He got up though, and seemed to be in good spirits as he greeted her and introduced himself as Archie. Fawn asked him if he knew what happened to Chase, and he said he did. He asked her if she had some time to listen. Fawn said she did. After an afternoon, Fawn learned more about Chase's life than she'd known herself, including his surprisingly loyal end. From that day on, Fawn found a friend in Archie and visited him everyday until she became too old to make the trek from her home to the kennel. She died peacefully, in her sleep not long after she realized this.
