History:
"I don't remember much of my childhood. I remember my mother, and her sparkling Amber eyes. I remember my father, being tall and proud. And I remember my siblings, but only thier warmth and smells. I don't recall leaving them, but somehow I did.
I remember a tall man, with dark hair picking me up and carrying me for a long while. We entered a small cave-like structure, which I would later call home. There was a pile of logs surrounded by stones in the wall, and a blazing fire inside. It warmed the cave, and added light. There were blankets, and warm furs on the floor which I snuggled in. The man sat on a soft bench-like structure, and I sat at his feet. I didn't know who this man was, but I knew he was special, and I needed to take care of him.
I eventually started calling him my master. He told me things like "sit" and "stay" and taught me what to do. I loved him more than my mother and father and silblings, because I knew him well. I knew that when he left in the morning, he would return later, usually with meat and animals. He would stand outside and use a shiny object to cut apart the animals. I would sit at his feet and watch, and sometimes he would give me a peice of the warm meat. Then, later, he would go into the cave and grab a white bone. He would shake it in my face and throw it across the snow. I would run after it and find it. Then, I would bring it back to him and he would pet me and say nice things. We did this for long periods of time, or so it seemed.
Then, tired, my master would open the door and lead me inside where I would sit at his feet and he would sing slow, deep songs. Sometimes I would sing with him. We were the best of friends.
Them one day, he put me on a long rope and took me into town with him. He carried the bag of animal furs and skins with him. I tried not to pull ahead but there were so many new smells and sights. The town was full of other people and dogs. Lots of the dogs ran around without a rope. I pulled after them but my master yelled at me and pulled harder on the rope. I shrank back and followed him into another cave.
There was lots of food and objects in here. I tried to sniff as many as I could, but my master told me to sit and stay, so I couldn't sniff as many things as I wanted to. I whined at him to let go of the rope, but he laid a hand on my nose and scolded me. I never whined again. He yelled at the man behind the wall a little bit and then we went back home, still holding the bag of animals. Later, he took me back to our home cave. I sat at the door when we went inside because I wanted to go back to the place with the people and the dogs. Master yelled at me again but I still wanted to sit at the door.
The next day I got up early and walked over to my master. I licked his face and he yelled at me some more. I don't know why he kept yelling at me, but he wasn't a very happy person that day. He didn't play with me, or go off on his own to look for animals. He didn't give me meat, and he didn't sing at night. When I sat by his feet, he pushed me away. I laid on the other side of the floor and slept. The pattern of these odd days repeated and I was getting bored. One day, he left the door open and so I ran outside. He didn't notice, so I decided to go to the town. I ran all the way by myself.
When I got there, I played games with the other dogs, and I sat and ate scraps with the other dogs. I felt like I belonged. Then, as I was playing, my master appeared in the street. He called for me but I hadn't finished our game. I kept running around. He called for me again, but I still played. He came over to me and grabbed me by the neck. The other dogs ran away, and I struggled to get free and run away with them. My owner dragged me to a dark corner. He yelled at me and slaped me hard.
I yelped for help, but no one came. My master took off my collar, and hit me with it. I whined and whined but he kept hitting me. Finally, I got loose and ran away from him. I joined the other dogs, and we hid in one of the caves together. My back hurt from where he hit me, but not as much as my heart. The other dogs tried to comfort me but it did not do any good. After a few days of lying in the cave, I got hungry. We headed over towards the meat place where a tall gray dog was standing. Another black and white dog was being mean to him, I started to head over to them but a couple of humans appeared and I shrunk back. I could not trust those creatures again.
The gray dog got chased away, and I ran after him. But I could not find him again. I searched the next day, but I still did not see him. One day, I was walking in the street with the other dogs when a familiar smell came near. I tried to remember who it was but I did not know. Then a rope was thrown around my neck and I was dragged away from the town. As I was being taken away, I saw the gray dog walk through the streets. I yelped at him to help me and he turned. But the rope tightened and I quieted. I kicked and squirmed and eventually the strange person let go of the rope. I leaped back and stood to face this creature. I immediately recognized my old master. I growled at him. He was not my friend anymore, and I did not love him. I heard padding footsteps and turned. The gray dog was running over to me.
While I was turned my master crept up on me. He grabbed at the rope. I swung around and bit his hand. Red liquid dripped down his hand. My mouth tasted tangy and metallic and I spit several times. My master yelled at me and I shrunk back, worried he was going to hit me again. Then the gray dog jumped at my master. He didn't bite, but he jumped up, scaring the human. My master yelled a few things and ran back towards his cave. I looked at the grey dog, grateful. He told me his name was Balto. He asked my name but I couldn't really answer. I didn't know it.
He asked if my master gave me a name. I nodded. Scout. Balto sneered. He told me I should chose a different name now that I had no master. I agreed, but could not think of anything to call myself. Balto suggested Kimba. I thought about it for a while and then nodded. I liked Kimba.
Balto led me towards the edge of town and showed me a tall wodden pole. It had many animal faces in it. Balto told me it was called a Totem Pole. I nodded. He then showed me the mountains. He told me about his mother being a wolf. I looked at him funny. He didn't look like a wolf.
Balto laughed and said it was because I was still unfamiliar with other dogs, having not seen one for the early years of my life. He told me that if I ever saw a wolf, I would see the similarities. We became great friends that day.
The next day I walked over towards the totem pole. I didn't care much for the wooden pole, but more for the lovely mountains far in the distance. Looking at them gave me a sense of freedom. I went to fin Balto. He was sitting and talking to a red and white husky. I watched from the shadows. I know it was bad of me, but I only wanted Balto to be my friend.
Feeling a little dissapointed, I decided to go back to the totem pole. I sat in the shadow and waited. Eventually Balto came up to me. I was a little mad at him for being with that other dog. But I didn't say anything. I told him about my plans to move into the mountains. He looked at me strange. He asked me why, and I told him. I wanted to be free, and to enjoy adventures. He thought I was nuts, but agreed that if I wanted to I should. I nodded. Later, Balto and I rounded up the other dogs and I told them about my plans to move to the mountains. I noticed the red and white dog sitting in the corner. She didn't seem interested. I felt a bit deflated. Most of the dogs muttered and shook their heads, but a few seemed genuinly interested. I told them I was leaving in the morning. I also said that we would meet at the totem pole if anyone wanted to go.
The next morning I sat at the Totem pole. Balto came up to me. I smiled at him nervously. If no other dog showed up, I would have to go alone. I didn't want that. Eventually, a sleek golden retriever came up to me. She wanted to come with me. She also said that her name was Jasmine, but she wanted to be called Jas. I nodded. After another few minutes, another dog came up. She was a pure white husky named Akita. After waiting for about an hour, three other dogs showed up. All without owners too. Total, including Akita, Jas, and me, we had a total of six dogs.
I felt my heart leap with excitement. I was finally getting freedom. I ran towards the mountains and my new pack followed me. Balto howled his goodbyes, and I promised him that I would visit regularly. Without looking back again, I turned and followed my pack into long awaited freedom.
Continues in his life now.
