Clarence, born Clarice, was the first-born of her small litter. Her father is Amos (Jenna's brother) and her mother is Rosaline. Rosaline died when she was young. She and Vesper were bought by the same owner and live together.
As Clarence grew older she made some friends and a little group of her own. These friends were Daisy, Nadine and Nadine's boyfriend Harry. She developed a dislike of wolves and wolfdogs by being influenced by Nadine's vocal views.
In 1928 her humans decided to visit Nome. There she met Steele, an interesting and ruggedly handsome malamute whom seemed quite a charmer. Vesper's choice of romantic interest was approved by Clarence - a local freight dog named Dingo.
It was Jenna whom approached Clarence. She introduced herself as Clarence's aunty and Amos' sister. They talked and she discovered Jenna had a mate and pups - now dogs. She also found out that this Dingo was her cousin.
Clarence's budding romance with Steele continued in quiet places. Jenna noticed her niece's choice of company and warned her about Steele - that he had tried to seduce her before she met her current mate Balto, and that he was not good for her. Clarence did a double-take - her aunty was the mate of Balto the wolfdog? She grudgingly accepted Jenna's invitation to bring along her sister and meet him, but started to shun what Jenna had said.
Her meeting with Balto wasn't particularly pleasant. Although Balto was a hero, Clarence still couldn't stand wolfdogs.Against all warnings Clarence continued to go out with Steele. She was in love with the malamute, but her time in Nome would be over soon... and she might not see him again.
It was with mixed feelings she reacted to her finding that she was pregnant. She told Vesper and Jenna excitedly, but Jenna didn't take the news well at all. She told her to stay far away from Steele and not to tell him she was expecting pups. Clarence ignored her advice and told him. Steele was unsure - she was quite lovely and all, but he didn't want to settle down, and he didn't really want anything to do with the pups. Clarence returned to White Mountain considerably upset about how gullible she could be to think Steele was the right dog for her.
When she came back, Nadine was horrified as single mothers weren't exactly accepted by society, and thought that Clarence was incredibly stupid to get pregnant. She left Clarence and Harry, not wanting to lose Nadine at all, also followed. Daisy and Vesper stayed with her to try and support her.
Mona, Reuben, Phobos, Seraphim, Ebony-May and Garnet were born. Her family sold all the pups they could and gave away what they could not sell, as they only wanted Clarence.
