Balto DVDs screenshots ratio

Comparing the ratio of the Balto DVDs released

The most noticeable change between the DVDs is the picture ratio. The American DVD has a 4/3 (fullscreen) ratio, while the other has a 16/9 (widescreen) one. So if you had to choose which DVD to get, the answer is clear.  The non-US DVD is better because it's much closer to the original ratio of the film in theaters.

Balto american DVD   Balto european DVD

American Balto DVD                                 Other regions Balto DVD

Although, less known is the fact that the non-US DVD is not perfect either and also cut a little of the screen. See these pictures of the exact same frame:

 Balto frame US

American Balto DVD

Balto frame foreign DVD

European / Other Balto DVD

If we stick the pictures together, we get this :

 Balto DVD frame, both versions

See? The U.S. version is clearly bad as it cuts most of the picture, but the non-US version is also cutting a little of the bottom.

Other differences between the DVDs include different menus, a little game on the U.S. DVD (I think), and a documentary on the non-U.S. DVD.

Is there a perfect version of the film available on home video? Yes, the laserdisc version. That one has the perfect picture. Although, good luck for finding one...along with the player. Well...maybe one day Universal will release a special edition widescreen DVD or a Bluray. One can only dream, right?

But for most people living in the US, and if you can't wait to get a better version, you should consider getting the non-US DVD. Try to go to online European stores or sites like Ebay, you should be able to find some that accept overseas deliveries. Although you'll have to use a computer (with VLC for example) or a region-free DVD player to read it. (most DVD home players will refuse to read other region DVDs, due to silly marketing reasons)

Or try getting the Brazilian version : this one has the advantage of being region-free (meaning you can use your DVD in any player)

I literally just got myself a copy of the Balto laserdisc earlier tonight, brand new and sealed, on amazon.com! It's technically a Christmas present from my grandma, so I'm pretty excited about it! Won't be opening it though, haven't got the player anyway.

I just bought a Balto laserdisc New on eBay for $11 and bought a laserdisc player at a thrift store for $15 and it works great! I feel like a Balto junkie having the DVD, VHS, and Laserdisc of the same movie.

hello an other potential reason for this may be the fact that tvs in the US work differently than European tvs. in the US tv are run in a system of NSTC, while in Europe they operate in PAL, in computers its all digital so its irrelevant if you are playing it on a PC. however the analog signals (PAL and NSTC) may support different resolutions so that may be that cause of the screen changes also if you tv is not a super expensive multregion tv most likely it wont display correctly.

As I've planned a few months ago, I've now bought the European French Edition of the DVD. (Got it on Ebay for a very low price and in very good condition). I should receive it in approximately one or two weeks. ;)

Very interesting article. :)

For me, I'm thinking about buying the French issue Region 2 of the movie. Mainly because of the widesceen format. Then, I'll just have to change the region of the DVD (with a software), so that my DVD players be able to read it. I have to admit that the DVD region 1 of North America slightly disappointed me. At least, I do own the DVD, which is the most important. ;)

Wow, great article, Steet. I always did find it rather strange how the European version is widescreen. Unfortunately I'm in the US.

So I am not the only one who noticed these differences. It's quite sad that neither of the DVD-regions don't have the original size of the screen. But more or less, I'd recommend the non-US one as well. Not only for the fact that it's widescreen but also for those features it includes. (as you mentioned documentary, theatre trailer, etc)

About the laserdisc, there are a couple of them on eBay for reasonable prices (imo at least) but sadly, I didn't find any laserdisc players around here for some.....good number of years.

On top of all, good article, steet!
