play.
"So Vincent, which neighborhood do you think would be best for you? One with lots of kids, or one with not so many?" Slick ask, twisting on his butt so he was facing the older German Shepherd. "Maybe something fancy, something kinda mellow, ooo maybe somewhere with a hot tub!" Vincent, to keep him from talking more, grabbed his muzzle shut.
His grip was so strong that Slick couldn't even move his head.
"Slick. Zip it or lose it." He growled, smiling. After that, he let go, and Slick opened and closed his maw. "Anyway, I like a little population and noise, so a few kids are good to have around."
Before they could continue discussing it, a little boy, around eight years old, walked up to the trio. They paused in their discussion and looked at him, looking curious.
"Aaaww, you're such a handsome boy." He said, smiling. The dogs glanced at each other, wondering who he was talking to, since they were all guys. Moments later, Vince jumped as he was scratched behind his one ear. The older Shep felt the little boy feel all around his collar, looking for a tag.
"Nothing... Wait here, don't go anywhere." The boy backed away slowly, holding his hands up and motioning down for the trio to stay, then he ran off. Slicks blinked and looked at Vince.
"He could have been more clear." He said, and the other two smiled.
"I bet he went to go ask his mom or someone if he can keep you." Zero said, noting that Vincent's tail was wagging fast. "And I hope it's a yes Vince."
"Yeah... I'd really like that." The old dog said, a huge smile on his face. Soon, the boy returned, but not with a parent. It was an older girl, about fifteen, looking curious.
"... You said you were looking for a dog, and this one has nothing on him. You'll like him, he's really cool looking." The little boy was saying, smiling widely. "You always tell me how you wanted a dog."
"Yeah, but I can't just take in a random stray you find, I-" She paused when she saw Vincent, and the boy stopped dragging her along, feeling satisfied that he had done a good job. She walked up to him on her own, and Zero and Slick scooted away to give room, and she leaned down so she was looking into his eye. Vincent's tail started to slow, feeling she would judge him due to how rough he looked due to his injuries.
She rubbed his smoothed, burned face slowly, rubbed his rough-furred side, and scratched a little where his missing ear should have been. He gave her nose tip a small, hopeful lick. That sealed it for him as she hugged him.
"My parents are going to love you." She said, smiling. She reached into her bag and pulled out some food, giving it to him. Vincent turned to his friends after finishing the offered food and grinned, his tail a blur behind him. When he was done, she grabbed his collar, her hand smooth against his fur, and started leading him off.
The little boy followed close behind. "Will you bring him over when you come to watch me?"
"Of course, but remember, it's if my parents say yes."
"They better, or I'll come over and complain. I like him."
Slick and Zero watched them go, smiling. Zero looked at Slick and offered his paw. Slick obliged the proffered shake.
"Mission accomplished." They said together, then starting to go off. They knew they would see Vince later at the Fleabite, and couldn't wait to share the news with the others. They both wondered how mad Espee would be that he wasn't the one who found the home.
